DPS Schools Hold Fundraisers to Aid Haiti Relief Efforts

As news of the devastation in Haiti continues to dominate the headlines, our thoughts are with the thousands of people who have been so greatly impacted.

Thank you to the DPS schools that participated in Tuesday's Bake Sale to Benefit Haiti. The sales were a huge success!

South High School – The South Student Senate will hold a bake sale on from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28.
Barrett Elementary is holding bake sale on Friday, Jan. 29 -- 2900 Richard Allen Court
Rishel Middle School is holding a bake sale on Friday, Jan. 29 - 451 S. Tejon St.
Columbian Elementary is hosting a bake sale on Friday, Jan. 29 8-9:30 a.m. - 2925 W. 40th Ave.
Montclair is hosting Kids for Kids Bake Sale Jan. 27-29, 3:45 p.m. until 4:15 p.m. each day. (1151 Newport St.)
Sabin is hosting a bake sale on Feb. 4 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. - 3050 S. Vrain St.
Cheltenham is hosting a bake sale on Jan. 27 3-4 p.m. -- 1580 Julian St.

Other school efforts include:

Maxwell Elementary is holding a "Helping Haiti" event Feb. 8-12 to raise at least $1,000 for the earthquake victims. The school is planning many special activities that week:

  • Monday, Feb. 8: "Coins for a Cause" -- bring your coins all week and contribute to your class jar.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 9: "Hats off to Haiti" -- bring your coins and wear your favorite hat
  • Wednesday, Feb. 10: Bake sale during Primary Gymnastics Night 5-7 p.m.

Castro Elementary students are making "Valentines for Haiti" to raise funds for earthquake victims. All Valentines will sell for $1 after school on Feb. 11 from 1-2 p.m.

Fairmont Dual Immersion Academy is holding a bake sale Tuesday Jan. 26 from 7-9a.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m. Vita Bella Pizza and Pasta will be donating supplies and baked goods.

Bryant Webster is collecting band aids, toothbrushes, diapers, disinfectant, gauze, baby formula and other health items for Haiti.

On Friday, Jan. 29, the school will celebrate Hats for Haiti. Students and staff who donate $1 or more can wear a hat that day to school.

Rishel Middle School is holding a bake sale Friday, Jan. 29.

The  Colorado Music Educators Conference and the Denver School of Arts are holding a Haiti Benefit Concert Jan. 26 @ 7 p.m. Click here for details.

Place Bridge Academy is hosting a Penny War between all grade levels. Students and staff are seeing who can collect the most pennies for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Oakland Elementary is hosting a "Dress Down" day. The cost for the privilege to dress down is $1 for staff and $0.50 for students to benefit Haiti.

Goldrick -- The Student Council has organized "Hearts for Haiti." All proceeds will go to the Red Cross. Each person who donates $1, or whatever they can, will receive a heart with their name hung in the school's hallway. They will begin in the main office and then create a train of hearts to the Haiti map on the wall down the hall as a symbol to show the students are giving from their hearts to their neighbor Haitians.

John H. Amesse Elementary is holding a Dollar Drive throughout the week of Jan. 25. For every $1,000 received, students will earn a "dress down" day. Funds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Cory Elementary -- Hats for Haiti: students and staff at Cory will wear hats all day on Jan. 26. The cost for the privilege to wear a hat is $1.

Cowell Elementary -- Quarters for Haiti Drive -- Students, staff, and parents are donating quarters to a fund that will be sent to relief agencies for the earthquake victims in Haiti.

McGlone Elementary is holding a Penny Drive until Jan. 29 where students and families can contribute coins and dollars to be donated to the American Red Cross.

McGlone is also having a Jeans Day Friday, where students and teachers can contribute a dollar to the effort and wear jeans.

Lake International School -- 8th grade students have organized a relief fund for the Red Cross. As of Thursday, students have raised nearly $500. Donations will continue to be collected until Friday, Jan. 29. Checks can be made out to Lake International.

Odyssey Charter -- Girl Scout troop #2794 is organizing a shoe drive for the children of Haiti. Please donate gently worn shoes at Odyssey. The shoes will be shipped to the Charity in Alabama, which will distribute to Haiti.

William “Bill” Roberts K-8 School – Second-graders at Roberts have already started a bake sale on behalf of Haiti. Their sale is running all this week through Friday.

Ellis Elementary -- After hearing of the devastation and the immensity of the need in Haiti, the Student Leadership Team at Ellis Elementary decided to respond and create a fundraising effort they are calling "Giving a Hand to Haiti." From now until February 5th, any donation brought in by any students or members of staff will be celebrated by a hand cut out of paper displayed in the halls of the school.

The Student Leadership Team members will travel from class to class to explain the fund drive and to encourage donations. They also expressed hope that other Denver Public Schools students would do the same and create a system-wide "Giving a Hand to Haiti."

CMS Community School has joined a Soles4Souls campaign hosted by Action
Family ATA Taekwondo (www.actionfamilyata.com) to get new and gently used
shoes to victims of the earth quake in Haiti. The shoes will be shipped to a warehouse in Nevada
and will then make their way to Haiti by the end of the month.

Additionally, the CMS Earthforce club has begun a campaign to raise
donations for victims of the earth quake. Students will give presentations
to each classroom about the tragedy and will ask that students bring in
their donations. Please see Ms. Bronwen Forrestal if you are interested in
making a donation.

Florida Pitt Waller is having a drive to raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Each class is encourage to raise $100 by donations. On Friday, Jan. 22, the students will be able to wear jeans to school for a dollar and two dollars for the staff.

Academia Sandoval -- The school's student council is holding a bake sale on Feb. 1. They will also be selling donated items and collecting monetary donations. Proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

Oakland Elementary -- Girls Scout Troop 2865 will be donating to the American Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Relief

Columbian Elementary is hosting a bake sale on Friday, January 29, 8:00 – 9:30 a.m.  Third graders are sponsoring “no uniform days – if you pay $1.00 to help in Haiti.” We have an assembly next Friday afternoon at 2:00 and will announce the funds collected by third grade students and through the bake sale.

Kunsmiller Creative Arts Acadamy -- sixth-graders held a fund raiser all last week for Haiti, and several other classes are making Valentines to sell in the school to raise further funds.
