Thousands of Denver Children to Receive Immunizations in School

Students at nearly 30 Denver Public Schools will participate in a first-of-its kind school-based immunization program to boost the state’s vaccination rates.

The federally-funded program will study the ability to successfully deliver immunizations in school. The program will also bill insurers in an effort to keep the initiative financially sustainable – this approach makes the program a first in the U.S. and Colorado.

Denver Health, Denver Public Schools and Kaiser Permanente are leading the effort.

In 2002 and 2003, Colorado ranked 50th in the nation for childhood immunizations. While rates are improving, thousands of children struggle to obtain the preventive care they need. Schools offer a promising venue to reach more children with vaccines to improve public health.

On Thursday, Jan. 28, more than 100 students at Henry Middle School received immunizations.
