Initiatives
The district’s mission is clear... to provide all students the opportunity to achieve the knowledge and skills necessary to become contributing citizens in our society. Watch here as DPS continues to challenge itself, reform and grow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a timeline or deadline for the sale or lease of the facilities?
DPS will dispose of facilities when market conditions allow, and sell or lease the buildings only when it has received a use proposal that includes an acceptable price and a desirable plan for use. If market conditions are not attractive, DPS will consider various interim arrangements until market conditions are appropriate for sale or long-term lease.
How will the sale or lease proceeds be used?
Funds generated by the disposition or alternative use of facilities will be used to fund other DPS priorities, including increasing dollars spent in our classrooms.
How will potential buyers find out about the properties?
The properties will be marketed to buyers throughout the Denver metro area and the state of Colorado, as well as around the country. It will also be posted on www.dpsk12.org for interested parties to review. For additional information, please contact Will Lee-Ashley at vacantproperties@dpsk12.org.
Will DPS be engaging other parties to assist in the disposition process?
DPS may engage outside resources and trusted advisors, as appropriate, to assist in the disposition of the four properties.
How can I get updates about the sale process?
DPS will issue a series of mailings and electronic communications notifying community members of the public input process as well as the RFP process and any sale decisions. In addition, regular updates will be posted at www.dpsk12.org. For additional information, please contact Will Lee-Ashley at vacantproperties@dpsk12.org.
When will a buyer be chosen for each property?
Since there is no deadline attached to the disposition of the facilities, DPS will choose a buyer/lessee for each facility only when it has received an acceptable offer that meets the established criteria.
How can I provide input into the plans for each property?
Two sets of meetings will be held for each property - one in the summer of 2009 and one in the winter of 2009/2010, after sufficient proposals have been received. A notice of the meeting date, time and location will be issued to community members, released to media organizations and posted on www.dpsk12.org.
What does DPS want to see happen with each property?
DPS does not have specific requirements for each property's use, beyond encouraging that the proposal be compatible with each surrounding neighborhood's vision and goals.
Have any potential buyers already expressed interest in the properties?
Yes. This interest is being documented, and these potential buyers will be contacted when the properties are placed on the market.
Why were these facilities originally closed?
Each property was closed for unique reasons. Please see the "Facility Disposition Fact Sheets" included with this information packet (Pages 4-7) for further details.
Why can't the school buildings be reopened for educational purposes?
In brief, DPS does not believe these facilities will be needed for district uses. Please see the "Facility Disposition Fact Sheets" (Pages 4-7) included with this information packet for details related to each building's feasibility for school programs, or visit http://communications.dpsk12.org/initiatives/asset-utilization/ for a detailed analysis.
Where can I find additional information?
Please visit www.dpsk12.org or contact Will Lee-Ashley at vacantproperties@dpsk12.org.
