Butterflies are Freed at the Butterfly Pavillion

Sunday, October 25, 2009

BROOMFIELD, CO - Friday, October 23, 2009, students from Barnum Elementary are taking their home-grown butterflies and "freeing" them at the Butterfly Pavillion. After raising their beautiful larvae,  the third grade class is finding a proper home for its offspring.  The Butterfly Pavillion welcomes butterflies of all stripes into its fold.

Part of the Earth Science curriculum for third grade is the life-cycle.  Teachers ordered larvae from a science catalog for the students to witness first-hand this cycle.  Besides a few tense moments when one classroom got cold, the larvae progressed into the beautiful winged creatures who'll find new parents.

"Our students have been thrilled at raising their young!" said Arbragene Martin, a long-time Barnum teacher.  "This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to see where there hard work leads them.  If you nurture something, it will grow into a something beautiful--just like our children."

The Butterfly Pavillion, a natural history collection of butterflies and insects has long been a favorite for classes to visit.  Between wearing colorful clothes to attract butterflies to observing thousands of bees in a honeycomb, this is a collection is a cultural jewel in the metropolitan area.
