DECA Gives Back
Tuesday, October 20, 2009
The DECA chapter at Denver West High School celebrated National DECA Week, October 11-17, 2009. During this week West High DECA members participated in activities that are focused on the following areas; civic consciousness, social Intelligence, vocational understanding, and leadership development. West High's DECA members have decided to focus on civic conciousness. The club has decided to assemble gift bags with toiletry items that have been collected during DECA's traveling competitions as well as donated by local hotels in the West High School area. We will be donating these gift bags to young, high school students, at the Urban Peak youth shelter.
The gift bags contain shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, shower gel and mouthwash. Some toiletry items were donated by well established hotels in the Denver area as well as donated by students, staff and faculty at Denver West High School. Claudia Urbina a senior at West High School, who is also a DECA member, worked for a week organizing the event by calling hotels and retail stores for donations along with collecting from the West High School family. DECA students and their advisor sorted the items and assembled the bags during their marketing classes along with taking time out of their lunch periods to finish the job. Onesimo Talavera, a DECA member said, "It makes me feel good inside to help out someone who isn't as fortunate as I. I never realized the impact such a small thing can make in the lives of those in need."
The DECA advisor is quoted as saying, "I am extremely proud of the work that the DECA students have put forth in this project. Their ability to organize and disseminate responsibility is beyond their years and just goes to show that students can achieve anything when given the proper tools. It is my hope that we are able to continue in this vein for the rest of the year as we are off to an amazing start. Congratulations DECA students."
We would like to give a special thanks to The Hyatt Regency, And The Hilton Gardens Inn for making this wonderful project possible. From their major contributions we were able to make over 100 bags for students in need. Denver West High School DECA is proud to be able to participate in assisting our community. In the future we will be conducting a dining etiquette course for DECA members to enhance our business understanding and grow on a more personal level. It is our hope that we can continue to be supported by our community as we continue on in our future endeavors.
