Friday, November 13, 2009
WHEN: November 16, 2:15PM, School Gymnasium
WHERE: Florida Pitt Waller, 21601 E. 51st Place, Denver, CO 80249
WHY: The program is designed to combat childhood obesity and help youth develop life-long healthy eating and daily physical activity habits. For more than 90 years, National Dairy Council has offered research and nutrition education programs in schools with a commitment to providing leadership in the fight against poor nutrition, inactivity and obesity among out nation’s youth. Also, designed to tackle childhood obesity, NFL PLAY 60 is the National Football League’s movement to make the next generation of youth the most active and healthy. Together with like-minded partners, the NFL and its players unite under PLAY 60 to encourage kids to get up and play for 60 minutes a day.
Denver Public School’s Florida Pitt Waller recognized the importance of breakfast for health and academics. So they are taking breakfast into the classroom for all middle school students. Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) was recognized as a solution to feeding more children. FUTP 60 student team members became excited about BIC as many middle students expressed that they did not eat breakfast at school or home.
They will be celebrating with a school-wide assembly, called Eat Right Get Movin’ with Miles, featuring the Denver Broncos mascot “Miles”, to help generate excitement for the program
“Breakfast in the classroom is an ideal way to ensure that all kids have the opportunity for a healthy, nutritious breakfast,” states Bob Gorman, DPS Food and Nutrition Services Supervisor
. “I am very supportive and enthusiastic about the program, this is developing a greater sense of community and responsibility among students and the school overall,” stated school Principal Mr. Charles Babb.
“What is great about this program (FUTP 60) is that it motivates Florida Pitt Waller students to make changes in their own healthy food choices, to become more active and to improve the school environment, all at the same time,” says Sarah Gold, FUTP 60 school program advisor.
Florida Pitt Waller Middle School has made a long-term commitment to leading the way to improve access to more of the foods that children do not consumer enough of and are looking for ways to add more opportunities for physical activity within their school.
